Specialist structural design

Three double-elliptical suspended lights for the Hermès store on Rue de Sèvres, set in a 19th-century former swimming pool building.

The brief

Lights that carry changing art and clothing exhibitions and read as transparent in the space, hung from the existing structure of a 19th-century building.

What we did

Each light is loaded out of balance and designed to stay horizontal regardless of the load applied. Cables, stainless steel AISI 304 tubes and aluminium 6082 trays were checked for tension, compression, bending and SLS deflection, with lateral deflection under wind. Support and strengthening structure was designed at roof and ceiling level.

Outcome

Design completed for all three lights.
